The seminar “A Case for EU Competitiveness – Quotas in the Boardroom”, hosted by WIL member and Member of the European Parliament Silvana Koch-Mehrin at the European Parliament, focused on the Directive on gender quotas for non-executive directors, proposed by Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the European Commission.

On 6th March, in the build-up to the celebration of International Women’s Day, Claude Bartolone, the President of the French National Assembly, invited top level managers, leaders of women’s associations, elected delegates, human resources managers, researchers and journalists to a dinner debate addressing equality in the labor market.

On 14th February 2013, in the course of Microsoft Techdays, one of the most important and recognized IT events in Europe, WIL President Thaima Samman led a roundtable session on enterprises 2.0 as sources of new opportunities for gender equality. The event gathered diversity managers from different sectors for a lively debate on recruitment, work-life balance and new strategies adopted and tools used by companies to advance female leadership.

At a time when the world’s leaders were discussing at Davos the implications of a gender equality certification system for large companies, France was adopting a law implementing gender quotas on the boards of listed companies, while Germany was following close in step. The World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos brought upfront women’s presence in leadership by instituting a gender quota for the Forum as well as by launching The Gender Equality Project.

Political pressure to enhance gender equality is increasingly visible at the EU level. While MEPs’ demands for implementing gender quotas in the EU diplomatic service may delay its launch, Commissioner Reding, as part of the new strategy, aims at opening a dialogue with CEOs on how best to achieve gender equality in company boardrooms.

After 4 years of negotiations, UN decided to set up the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). With an approved budget of minimum $500m, the Agency will start working in the beginning of next year and unify four existing UN divisions dealing with women's issues.

The EU Commission analyzed its gender equality roadmap for 2006-2010. Belinda Pyke and Daniela Bankier were involved in the discussions, which addressed gender mainstreaming and the ways to limit the effects of the economic crisis on women.
