WIL member Viktorija Šmatko-Abaza joined the European Commission's Directorate General for Employment, Social Affairs and Equal Opportunities in March 2007 as Director responsible for audit, controls and evaluation. She is now the Directorate’s Principal Adviser.

On 4th March 2013, the European Commission launched a Grand Coalition for Digital Jobs, calling on Europe's digital businesses, governments, training and education sectors to join, and to address the projected deficit of 900 000 skilled ICT workers expected in Europe by 2015.

Today is Equal Pay Day in Europe, which marks the number of days women have to work “for free” in 2013, in order to earn the same amount as men did in 2012. This year, the day falls on the 28th February, slightly earlier than in the two previous years, the European Commission reports.

Political pressure to enhance gender equality is increasingly visible at the EU level. While MEPs’ demands for implementing gender quotas in the EU diplomatic service may delay its launch, Commissioner Reding, as part of the new strategy, aims at opening a dialogue with CEOs on how best to achieve gender equality in company boardrooms.

The European Commission has placed sustainable growth at the core of its strategy for 2020. This strategy must foster ways to cut green house gas by 20%, while heavily supporting R&D in a more and more competitive global market. While targets seem extremely challenging, it is worth acknowledging that more women are sharing decision-making powers in key sectors for the future.

The EU Commission analyzed its gender equality roadmap for 2006-2010. Belinda Pyke and Daniela Bankier were involved in the discussions, which addressed gender mainstreaming and the ways to limit the effects of the economic crisis on women.
